Validation &
Verification

With increasing focus on climate change, there is a corresponding increase in product manufacturers and technology development companies making claims to position themselves and their products/ technology as possible solutions to reduce carbon emissions in the built environment. Therefore, it is important that as emerging products/technologies come forward, they are vetted and assessed for their efficacy.

An outline of a car, wind turbines, park bench, trash can and bicycle are connected by symbols of solar power, electricity, recycling and the sun.

NEU’s technology validation/verification program will assess and validate the claims of innovative and new products/technologies associated with low carbon cement and concrete production. Validation and verification are defined as:

Validation: Evaluating reasonableness of the assumptions, limitations and methods that support an environmental statement about the outcome of future activities.

Verification: Evaluating an environmental information statement based on historical data and information to determine whether the statement is materially correct and conforms to relevant criteria.

The product/technology categories for NEU validation/verification program include, but are not limited to the following:

Cement or Cementitious Materials

  • Reduced Emissions Alternative Cements/Binders

  • Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs)

  • Reduced-Emissions Cement Manufacturing with Alternative Fuels and/or Energy Sources

Concrete

  • Low-Carbon Footprint Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC)

  • Low-Carbon Footprint Concrete

  • Nanoparticles used in Concrete

  • Admixtures used in Concrete

  • Mineral or Fibrous Additives used in Concrete

  • Concrete Mix Design Optimization

Aggregates

  • Manufactured Aggregates

  • Recycled Aggregates

Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS), Carbon Curing

Concrete Reinforcement

  • Low-Carbon Footprint Reinforcing Steel Bars

  • Non-metallic Reinforcing Bars

Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning

Others, subject to the approval of NEU Executive Director

The process is conducted impartially by subject matter experts (SME) based on internationally accepted standards and will consist of several phases including application and initial review, independent SME committee formation, SME review and report drafting.
