General Presentation

An Overview of Sustainable Concrete Design

Dr. Andrea Schokker, P.E., LEED AP, NEU

Green concrete, carbon-neutral concrete, sustainable design… so many terms and so much to learn about how to make it happen. Andrea Schokker, NEU technical consultant and board advisor, provides an overview of sustainable concrete basics from material choice to design, plus discusses what to do now and what we can expect for the future.

Demonstrating Low Carbon Concrete for Tilt-Up Wall Panel Construction

Tom Van Dam, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc.

The results of a low-carbon concrete tilt-up wall panel demonstration project will be presented that evaluated three concrete mixtures: a base level Type IL (Mix#1), the Type IL with 25% replacement with slag cement (Mix #2), and an ASTM C1157 cement with less than 5% portland cement (Mix#3). Extensive laboratory testing determined the bleed rate, initial and final set, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and drying shrinkage of the three mixtures as well as establishing maturity relationships. Considerable information was obtained through testing and in situ monitoring providing lessons on how to use concrete with significantly lower carbon even under difficult temperature conditions.

LC3 or Calcined Clay Cements, an Upcoming Alternative Material that has Multiple Benefits for the Production and Placement of Carbon Neutral Concrete

Dr. Karen Scrivener, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)

Karen Scrivener, FREng, EPFL Switzerland, discusses changing the pattern of cement use and the most promising approach to reducing the clinker factor. She explains calcined clays and why they are the only realistic option for extending the use of SCMs.

Decarbonizing Cement and Concrete-Based Constructions: What Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Could Mean for the Sector?

Dr. Gaurav Sant, University of California, Los Angeles

Gaurav Sant, Ph.D., professor and Pritzker chair in Sustainability, and Institute Director at the University of California - Los Angeles, discusses what CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage) could mean for the sector.

Carbon Neutral Concrete Materials and Technologies 2023, What to Implement Now and What is Coming

Mary Christiansen, PhD, LEED AP, University of Minnesota Duluth

Mary Christiansen, PhD, LEED AP, University of Minnesota Duluth, provides an overview of sustainability in terms of embodied carbon in concrete, where the C02 in concrete comes from, and the materials and technologies available today to reduce the carbon in concrete. Future technologies and materials for a low-carbon concrete future are discussed.

NEU Session on Low-Carbon Cement and Concrete

NEU Staff

This session is sponsored by NEU: an ACI Center of Excellence for Carbon Neutral Concrete and is geared toward all stakeholders, researchers, and students in the concrete industry. Attendees have the opportunity to learn about new materials and technologies to reduce carbon emissions in the cement and concrete industry, the NEU technology validation/verification program status, ACI code advocacy efforts, and the status of codes and standards for the use of low-carbon cement and concrete materials. This session was originally presented at the ACI Fall 2023 Convention in Boston.
